Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Hope Haven uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients address and change self-defeating behaviors.

Alcohol and drug abusers may exhibit behaviors that cannot be controlled through rational thought. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is "behavior focused" – undertaken for specific behaviors and "action oriented" – the therapist assists the client in selecting specific strategies to help address those behaviors.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques are used to help individuals challenge their behavior patterns and replace their "errors in thinking” with more realistic and effective thoughts. Errors in thinking include: overgeneralizing, magnifying negatives, minimizing positives and catastrophizing. The goal is to decrease the emotional distress and self-defeating behavior that contributes to addictive behavior.
